Gediminas Akstinas (Vilnius, 1961) is one of the most important artists and sculptors who emerged just after the independence of Lithuania from the Soviet Union. He was a leading part of a new generation of artists raised under Soviet times but mainly working in an recent liberated country full o a renewed energy. In his work sculpture and painting coexists together naturally.
In the 90s he was known by his large scale heavy sculptures and projects, which were exhibited in public spaces bringing a new atmosphere to a very young but incredibly talented art scene. Besides his large scale pieces he has developed a consistent practice which has led him to work in a more intimate scale. His watercolours and paintings impregnated by an enigmatic ironical aura relate to his sculptural work, and one can not be separated or understood without the other.
